In April 2024, Troop 3 headed to New York City. One of our older scouts, who turns 18 later this year, always wanted to go to the City, and our scouts wanted to make that wish a reality!
After camping Friday night at William H. Pouch Scout Camp on Staten Island, we caught the Staten Island Ferry (which amazed us all by being free) to Manhattan. Along the way, we saw the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
While in Manhattan, we:
- Visited the 9/11 Memorial and the Survivor Tree in Lower Manhattan
- Stopped at the Ghostbusters Headquarters in Tribeca, which is actually a functioning fire station.
- Toured the Intrepid, an aircraft carrier transformed into an air and space museum
- Played football in Central Park
- Took the subway to the Staten Island Ferry
- Cooked fajitas for dinner back in camp
During the day, we walked more than 10 miles, which allowed many of our scouts to earn their first 10-mile hike as part of the Hiking merit badge!
As a troop, our biggest takeaway was that New York City is an affordable and easier-to-reach-than-expected trip for us. Staying at William H. Pouch Scout Camp kept our lodging costs to a minimum and the free ferry to and from Manhattan saved on transportation costs. The trip has us thinking of other places in New York we could explore, like the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Hello Scouting Friends from Troop 3. We are Troop 210 in Conneautville, PA and also looking at staying at Camp Pouch and use the Ferry. How did you do that? Did you have to leave the camp by driving to catch the Ferry? Was it nearby? Any help would help us have an awesome adventure too.
